There are various types of woods and timbers used in furniture manufacturing. The wood and timber is mainly categorized in two types as:


  • Hardwood


  • Softwood



  • Hardwood

    Deciduous trees are the main source for hardwood. Deciduous trees usually become quiescent in winter seasons. Oak, maple, ash, cherry etc., are few examples of Deciduous trees. This kind of wood is not suggested for flooring or heavy duty jobs as they are little delicate. Few main types of hardwood are:



    Walnut
    A superfine texture and immense strength is combined in one wood which is named as Walnut wood. Carving and working with Walnut wood is considered to be most comfortable.

    Usage

    Walnut wood is greatly used for creation of wooden novelties, solid furniture, wall paneling etc.

    Mahogany

    It is a hard kind of wood which is grained diaphanously. This type of wood comprises high resistance towards problems like attenuation and swelling. The color Mahogany wood is brown with hint of red shade.

    Usage

    This type of wood is used for manufacturing of wooden cabinets, wooden facings etc. Mahogany wood is also used for construction of boats.

    Oak

    Oak is considered to be most exclusive out of all hardwoods. The bending quality of oak wood makes it different from others. Oak wood carries high resistance toward moisture.

    Usage

    Oak wood is immensely used for bordering of boats, furniture and desk etc.

    Maple

    Maple wood is known for its impeccable hardness. Maple would incorporate massive vigor.

    Usage

    Maple wood is commonly used for structuring of fine furniture and lying flooring as well.

    Cherry

    Cheery wood changes its color while exposed in sunlight. The durability of Cherry wood is simply outstanding.

    Usage

    Cherry wood is believed to be ideal for manufacturing of cabinets, novelties, wooden handle etc.

    Rosewood

    One of the hardest woods is named as Rosewood. Apart from its quality, Rosewood is widely famed for its fragrance. The color of rosewood is dark brown with reddish shade.

    Usage

    Rosewood is used for creation of musical instruments, art works, instrument cases/ covers etc.

    Teak

    Teak wood comprise unsurpassed strength. Teak wood carries immense resistance against moisture.

    Usage

    Teak wood is gigantically used for making of furniture, floorings, window frames etc.

    Shesham

    Shesham is one of the most popular types of wood. It is known for its rich texture. Shesham can be easily carved.

    Usage

    Shesham is widely used for making cabinets, cupboards and other furniture etc.



    Softwood

    Softwood is produced from coniferous tree species. Various types of softwoods are used for decorative tasks. Few most known types of softwood are



    Pine

    Pine wood is easy to carve. Pine wood carries an unvarying texture.

    Usage

    Pine wood is greatly used for furniture making, box making and constructions etc.

    Hemlock

    Hemlock is a light weighted wood which posses uniform texture.

    Usage

    Hemlock wood is used for making doors, panels, boards etc.

    Redwood

    Redwood is again a light weighted type of wood. Working with redwood is very convenient and easy.

    Usage

    Redwood is generally used for fencing, outdoor furniture, furnishing etc.

    Spruce

    Spruce is another type of softwood which is well known for its vigor and durability.

    Usage

    Spruce is vastly used for manufacturing of boxes, ladders, ship-spars etc.

    Cedar

    Like rosewood Cedar wood also carry a sweet aroma. Cedar wood is easy to carve and finish as well.

    Usage

    Cedar wood is hugely used in making of drawers, chest, novelties and planks etc.
